This tutorial explains how to use FTP to upload Mambo files to your server.
FTP stands for "file transfer protocol" and is a means of uploading and downloading files directly from your server space, as well as providing a way to move files and change permissions.
First, you need FTP access to your server space. Most hosted websites have an FTP account set up. You should be able to see your FTP account in your Plesk or cPanel control panel. If it is not there and there is no facility for creating an FTP account, you will need to contact your host and ask them to set up an FTP account on your site's server space.
Once you have your FTP account and know the path to it and your login and password, you need to download an FTP client. There are many good FTP clients available, such as SmartFTP and an open source, cross-plaform FTP client that is very popular, called FileZilla.
Then, its just a matter of installing the client on your computer, setting it up to access your FTP account, and learning how to use it. Much of the information you need for learning how to use a FTP client is provided on their websites (see Tutorials on the link I gave here for SmartFTP).
There is also a tutorial for FTP beginners that you might find helpful: http://www.phpjunkyard.com/ftp-chmod-tutorial.php
It shows how to use FTP and how to CHMOD (ie. change the mode of the files, which means, changing file permissions).
