Upgrading Mambo is important to keep your site secure. The latest release of Mambo, version 4.6.5, for example, fixes a number of potentially serious security vulnerabilities. While these vulnerabilities can only be exploited if a server is not adequately secured many shared hosting providers do leave holes in their server security. Therefore, keeping Mambo up-to-date is important. (It's important to keep ALL your software up-to-date, not just Mambo!)
If you have not already done so, you should upgrade to the latest stable version of Mambo as soon as possible. The latest files can always be found on the Mambo code forge.
If you are upgrading from a very old version of Mambo there is a document on the Mambo forums that will take you through the steps. I posted it some time ago and I understand it will soon be added to the Mambo documentation.
The very old patches and more information about upgrading from early versions of Mambo can be found here: Upgrading old versions of Mambo.
Many of the upgrade patches contain SQL queries. These are found in the upgrades directory in the download. The SQL upgrades need to be run in order to bring your database up to date. If your server uses cPanel you will have access to a database management program called phpMyAdmin.
UPDATE:
I have added a PDF file to show you how to use phpMyAdmin to run database updates. You can download this here.
